Mirwaiz stresses Kashmiris' inclusion in Pak-India talks
SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has stressed the inclusion of Kashmiris in the dialogue process between Pakistan and India to make it meaningful and result-oriented.
The APHC Chairman said this during a meeting at his residence in Srinagar with the members of New Delhi-based Kashmir Committee including its Chairman, Ram Jethmalani, VK Grover, Madhu Keshwar and Manu Sharma.
The Mirwaiz said, "Even though the talks between India and Pakistan pertaining to Kashmir problem and other issues are a right step in right direction, the participation of the Kashmiri people, who are main party to the dispute, was unavoidable to make the whole process result-oriented."
He maintained that serious steps also needed to be taken on ground to alleviate the sufferings and problems of the people of the occupied territory. He made it clear that dialogue and violence could not go together.
The APHC Chairman lauded the efforts of the Committee in connection with the Kashmir settlement. He impressed upon the need to double the efforts while advising the members to take the Indian civil society also onboard. He told the committee members that the APHC had always regarded the importance of negotiations aimed to settling the lingering dispute and assured the members that it would provide all possible support to the Committee's efforts aimed to resolve the Kashmir problem.
The Mirwaiz said that all cross-LOC routes should be thrown open and travel documents should be made easier for people to travel across the border. He pointed out that such confidence building measure would prove to be helpful to resolve the Kashmir dispute. The Mirwaiz further said that the prime importance should be given to Kashmiri traders in the cross-LoC trade so that objectives for which the trade was initiated were achieved.
On the occasion, Ram Jethmalani assured that the Kashmir Committee would continue to make efforts for demilitarization of Kashmir and lifting of blacks laws like Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the occupied territory.
Earlier, talking to media persons at the residence of senior APHC leader, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Ram Jethmalani said that Kashmir was a complex issue. "I have come here to create friendly atmosphere and good will. I am going back with a greater hope," he told the reporters.
