MIRPUR: Eight persons were gunned down in an ambush, allegedly by a rival group over a decades-old enmity, in the remote village of Garhoon in Samahni valley of Bhimbher district, Azad Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday.

According to police sources, those shot included three real brothers and their father, who were identified as Raja Goher Mumtaz Khan, Raja Ejaz Mumtaz Khan, Raja Shehzad Mumtaz Khan, Raja Mumtaz, Raja Bilal, Raja Shamrais, Raja Amjad and Raja Nomi.

The victims were ambushed on the way to the district courts to appear in the district and sessions court in an under-trial murder case pending against them, a police officer confirmed.

Senior officials of Bhimber district administration, including Deputy Commissioner Khawaja Naeem Bismil, Superintendent of Police Muhammad Kamran and Mirpur SSP Munir Hussain, rushed to the scene with heavy police contingents.

The families of the eight victims rushed to the scene and staged a protest demonstration by placing the bodies on Samahni-Bhimbher road, near the killing location. A case has been registered with the police station concerned of Samahni valley and further investigations are in progress.
