Shujaat rejects Musharraf’s suggestion to unify PML-Q

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Monday refused former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf’s offer to help unify all factions of the PML-Q.
A senior PML-Q official confirmed that Musharraf had made the suggestion during a meeting with Moonis Elahi when the latter visited Musharraf in London.
“Shujaat politely turned down the proposal saying that Musharraf had already put his weight behind one faction of the PML-Q, led by Hamid Nasir Chattha,” the official said, adding that Humayun Akhtar Khan’s recent visit to Musharraf’s residence proved that the former president was backing the rebel group.
Musharraf had reportedly suggested unifying PML factions, saying he was ready to play his role in the process if Shujaat steps down from the party’s top slot, making way for him to lead the party. Moonis conveyed the message to Shujaat on Monday when he arrived in Lahore from Germany.
When contacted, PML-Q Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Sayed said his party was clear that there was no role for the former dictator in the political arena of the country.
“We are clear over the issue. We have embarked upon a countrywide drive to reorganise the PML-Q. We have no intention to seek favours from anyone, including the former president,” he said.
Mushahid said Musharraf had already left the country for a lecture tour and he would be on the trip for around four months. “I think he (Musharraf) has gone and has no plans to return to the country. There is no chance for his return to the political field and we wish him good luck,” he added.
Mushahid hinted at a public announcement over the issue in a few days, saying that soon the party leaders would meet to devise a future strategy.
“As Chaudhry Shujaat has returned from Germany, PML NWFP President Amir Muqam is set to arrive [next] Monday while Sindh chapter President Ghous Bakhsh Khan Mehr and other leaders would be available on the phone for consultation,” he said.
