An 'understanding', not deal, was reached on Musharraf's exit: Kaira
14 July, 2014
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Sunday came up with a new version about deal with former military ruler Pervez Musharraf saying that it was a kind of "understanding" to let him go rather than a deal or agreement.
PPP's Central Information Secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira, who also served as Information Minister in the cabinet of former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani who stirred up a new debate in the country about deal with Musharraf in an exclusive talk with our sources explained the ground situation at the time of Musharraf's exit from the power corridor.
Kaira emphatically stated that words of former Prime Minister Gilani were distorted by electronic media when he talked at a press conference in Karachi couple of days back and ignited a new debate in the country, which has engulfed the TV screens and pages of newspapers since then.
Outspoken Kaira recalled the events that led to resignation of Pervez Musharraf and said that PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari also conveyed his feelings to Mian Nawaz Sharif when they met at Raiwind.
"We have not become powerful so much so that we can kick out Musharraf from Presidency", Kaira quoting Zardari said in the meting with Nawaz. Howerve he assured that him the day would come when "Jeay Bhutto" slogan will echo in President House.
Kaira said that Musharraf could not have been ousted forcefully because he was empowered with 58 2 B at that time as well as his trusted confidants were in the key positions of the state.
He could have been persuaded, Kaira pointed out to leave the office of president and the same thing Asif Zardari did when he conveyed to Musharraf to resign from the Presidency House upon his return from Raiwind.
PPP leader said that Musharraf was given two options either to resign or face the impeachment for which even the documents have been prepared and a committee did this task which was comprised of PPP and PML-N members.
When asked about the reasons for safe exist to Musharraf by the previous PPP government, Kaira said that it was wrong to analyze the ground situation in 2008 by living in 2014.
"Yes look the circumstances of 2008 when Musharraf was still powerful so making judgments and passing the remarks against Musharraf in 2014 is easy than taking action against him in 2008 when he possessed the considerable powers", he said.
End.
