SIALKOT: Pakistani prisoner, Sanaullah Haq who died in an Indian hospital following a brutal attack in Indian Held Kashmir's (IHK) Kot Bhalwal Jail, was laid to rest with full honours in his hometown here on Thursday night, our sources reported.

A smartly turned-out contingent of police gave him a gun salute before the burial.

Hundreds of people turned out at his funeral prayer.

Haq, who was serving a life sentence in India, became a victim of vengeance a day after a convicted Indian spy and terrorist, Sarabjit Singh, was attacked in a similar fashion at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore.

His attacker, Vinod Singh Bisht, a former Indian army serviceman, inflicted the same brain-deep head injuries as were received by Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan.

Bisht, who had attacked Sanaullah on May 3, was booked for premeditated murder. He is serving a life sentence for murder and under the Indian law, if a life convict commits another murder he is to be awarded the death penalty.

Islamabad has demanded an international probe into the "heinous" crime.

Haq, arrested in 1990 for inadvertently crossing the border into India, was convicted under Terrorism & Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act.

He was unjustly sentenced to life in prison in 2009 for being a Pakistani militant operating in Indian Held Kashmir. The charges framed against him included murder and waging war against India.

His body was flown by a special Pakistani plane to his hometown Sialkot later on Thursday for burial.

A Pakistan foreign ministry statement said the brutal manner in which Haq was attacked in the jail was most unfortunate. It demanded that India investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.

End.
