New Delhi, December 13 (Online): Six-year-old Pakistani child Hamza, who underwent a successful liver transplant in a city hospital here, was recuperating in intensive care unit (ICU) Tuesday, reported IANS .

\"The kid is still under special supervision. But we will not talk about it till later this week keeping in mind the psychological condition of his parents,\" said Anupam Sibal, the medical director of the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital .

However, sources in the hospital said the kid underwent a liver transplant Monday that lasted for around 12 hours .

\"A large part of the child\'s liver was not functioning and we had to perform a segmental liver transplant. A part of the mother\'s liver was used to complete the operation,\" a hospital source said .

\"The operation was successful but both the mother and the kid are still in the ICU. They will be there under special attention for the next three to four days,\" he added .

The source said the child was too weak and his body almost looked yellow because of the liver ailment. Hamza, who turns seven Dec 19, is here with his parents and two of their relatives. He was admitted to the hospital Dec 7 and would remain there for about seven weeks for post-operative care .

Before the surgery, the child wanted to meet Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar, who complied with his wish Sunday .

\"We are touched by the magnanimity of Sachin and it also helped the kid to see and play with his idol,\" said Sibal .

End.
