CHENNAI, January 24 (Online): A Pakistani baby suffering from a heart condition has been given a new lease of life by doctors in this Tamil Nadu capital and is now preparing to go home.

Fifteen-month-old Maxwell Qayyum was a typical blue baby, with blood vessels restricting flow of oxygenated blood into his body. But doctors at the Sri M.G. Ramachandran Medical College and Hospital in Chennai have put him firmly on the path to recovery after a surgery.

He arrived in India last month and was operated upon by cardiologist K.R. Balakrishnan and his team of paediatricians last week. The baby, accompanied by father Qayyum, who is a teacher, and mother Aster, has now been released from the hospital and goes home to Karachi this week.

"The treatment was facilitated by Shabina Mustafa, from the Garage School in Karachi, a school for the underprivileged, who helps poor Pakistani children get medical assistance in India," Aster told reporters here.

End.
