NEW YORK: Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has said that PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, who has been talking of putting him on trial on charges of treason after coming into power, will never be able to do that because he will never come into power again.

Addressing the first-ever gathering of the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) here on Saturday evening, Musharraf said he never apologised for the Lal Masjid operation and the killing of Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti. “What I did as the president at that time was right and if I got power again and such a situation arose, I would repeat the same action,” he announced.

He said that Nawaz Shraif raised the slogan of “Jaag Punjabi Jaag” just to get votes and now when the Punjabis were being butchered in Balochistan, he did not mention it but was also giving shelter to those Bugti leaders in Lahore who were behind the killing of the Punjabis. “The correct slogan is Jaag Pakistani Jaag,” he told the crowd, which cheered him loudly whenever he lashed out at the PML-N leadership.

Pervez Musharraf lashed out at the PML-N chief, saying, “Nawaz Sharif has a basic problem, which caused his confrontation with four Army chiefs, two presidents and one chief justice during the times he was the prime minister of the country.”

A few dozen PML-N workers staged a protest in front of the building where Pervez Musharraf attended a gathering of about 1,000 supporters of his party. The PML-N workers, holding placards, raised slogans against Pervez Musharraf and also taunted those who were entering the building to listen to the former president. On one occasion, the PML-N workers exchanged hot words with supporters of Pervez Musharraf as well. However, security police controlled the situation and separated both the groups.

Musharraf accepted that as the president, he met former prime minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto three times. He also once again extended apology to the Pakistani nation for the promulgation of the National Reconciliation Ordinance.

Musharraf said the Pakistani people were disappointed, which was a very bad sign and could jeopardise the survival of Pakistan as a nation. The Muslim League created Pakistan under the leadership of Quaid-i-Azam and now they would recreate the country under the banner of the All Pakistan Muslim League, he said. Other APML leaders, including Pervez Mehmood and Dr Nasim Ashraf, also spoke on the occasion.
