Wali struck $35m 'secret deal' with US, alleges Hoti

PESHAWAR: Former Awami National Party (ANP) leader Senator Azam Hoti on Monday alleged that ANP leaders Asfandyar Wali Khan and Senator Afrasiab Khattak had struck a "secret deal" with the United State for $35 million.
"Both the leaders have sold out the party," Senator Hoti, who was last month expelled from the ANP on so-called "disciplinary ground", told a news conference on Monday at the Peshawar Press Club. He alleged that the two ANP leaders had struck a "deal over the Pakhtun nation".
According to Hoti, the deal was struck during the visit of Asfandyar along with party members to the US in 2009, which was arranged by former MNA Naseemur Rehman through a US national.
As a result of deal, Asfandyar received a payment of $35 million, Azam alleged. "Asfandyar Wali Khan and Afrasiab Khattak had a secret agreement with the US… approximately $35 million were taken from the US as part of this agreement," Hoti alleged, adding that the ANP leaders had disappeared for 10 days in the US
He said that it was a "white collar crime" having no evidence, but its veracity could be checked from Naseemur Rehman and the US citizen, whose identity he did not disclose. He further said that although he had no proof to support his claims, he would bring the evidence as soon as he gets it. According to Hoti, the agreement was related to the Taliban and also involved an Arab country. He also called Afrasiab Khattak a thief who along with Asfandyar Wali Khan had "destroyed the party". He said an investigation should be held to evaluate the assets of Asfandyar, which had increased significantly during the last five years. He had constructed a palace in Dubai and a shopping mall in Malaysia, Azam alleged.
He said the lifestyle of Afrasiab Khattak had also changed "who is now using a bullet proof car". His assets should also be probed, he added. On other hand, ANP leader Senator Zahid Khan said Hoti himself had admitted that there was no proof to the allegations. "We were in government during the last five years, why were these allegations not levelled then?" Zahid Khan said.
