ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People's Party (PPP) parliamentarians have asked Faisal Raza Abidi to resign from his Senate seat for what they call a violation of the party discipline.

Abidi, an outspoken and firebrand leader, was elected to Senate on a general seat from Sindh in March 2009. His tenure is slated to expire in March 2015, when the Senate election takes place.

In a statement released on Wednesday, PPP General Secretary Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, on the direction of the party leadership, sought Abidi's resignation. A fiery Abidi has not come into the limelight for the first time. He has faced the music for his controversial and blatant statements time and again and has stirred up a storm in the country.

Last month, Abidi was put on a show-cause notice for his conduct and violation of the party line by PPP Sindh President Qaim Ali Shah. Abidi had tendered his resignation in January 2013 for his salvos against the then chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, but withdrew it after holding a meeting with PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

End.
