Five killed in Maoist attack in Nepal

KATHMANDU, January 03 (Online): Nepal's Maoist guerrillas gunned down five security personnel and injured six in an attack Sunday, a day after they ushered in the New Year with an ambush that killed 14 members of the security forces.
The rebels opened fire on a police patrol at 7 a.m. at Bankhet in Kanchanpur district in the country's southwestern tip near the Indian border, once famous for its Royal Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, reports IANS.
Four policemen, including Inspector Sudip Kumar Yadav, died instantly. The fifth died in hospital.
The condition of two of the six injured policemen was said to be serious.
Monday's attack brought the toll inflicted on security forces since the start of the New Year at 19.
The rebels ambushed a patrol in the Dharan-Dhankota area in southern Nepal Saturday, killing 12 security personnel.
On Sunday, a human rights team went to the area and discovered the bodies of two more security personnel missing since the attack. Three more security men are believed to be missing.
The Nepalese media Sunday said security sources were claiming at least 25 Maoists were killed as army reinforcements were rushed to the area with aerial support. However, the figure could not be independently corroborated.
