KARACHI: At least six bandits within seven minutes looted approximately Rs 4 million from a private bank near Hassan Square in Gulshan-e-Iqbal within the limits of Aziz Bhatti police station here on Wednesday.

The bandits also snatched weapons from bank guards, cell phones from staff and videotapes and fled to unknown destination after swift operation. Police, however, detained a guard on suspicion.

Station House Officer (SHO) Kansan Deon said at least six armed men entered the bank in Block 13-A, Gulshan-e-Iqbal at around 11:00am and after snatching a repeater of a bank guard Maqbool, held entire staff hostage at gunpoint and looted around Rs 4 million from the bank in just seven minutes. They also snatched six mobile phones from the staff and fled along with the videotapes and weapons of the bank guards, he said.

The officer said the armed men, who came at the crime scene in white loading pick up, first subdued security guard after snatching their weapons and then entered the bank. The bandits ordered the bank staff to lie down on the floor and ordered bank manager Salman Siddiqui to open the strong room after which they collected Rs 4 million and fled.

The SHO further said that all the bandits appeared to be Pakhtoons and wore Shalwar Kameez. Following the incident, the bank staff immediately informed the police after which a team of Aziz Bhatti police rushed to the scene. The police said they had taken into the custody the bank guard for questioning, and registered a case against unidentified men on the complaint of bank manager and initiated a probe into the case.

SSP Crime Range East Niaz Khoso also visited the spot and told media that the security system of the bank was not efficient and guards were also inexperienced, adding that police had started investigation and they were hopeful to arrest the bandits involved in the robbery. It is pertained to mention here that it was the 14th bank robbery in current year.

End.
