KARACHI: Metropolitan Commissioner Samiuddin Siddiqui said all officers concerned and organisations should fulfil their responsibilities with utmost discipline during Muharram such that the citizens do not face any difficulty during the month.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, he said District Municipal Corporations must ensure cleaning of Muharram procession routes with the removal of garbage alongside roads and correction of sewerage lines. He said this while meeting a delegation of the Ahle-e-Sunnat Jamat, Karachi in his office.

Siddiqui said all necessary arrangements have been made to provide basic facilities to participants in Muharram processions. He said different camps would also be held by the KMC during Muharram.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has directed that no effort be spared for maintaining religious harmony, brotherhood and law and order during Muharram ul Haram and all out resources be utilised for this purpose.

He directed that even better security arrangements be made this year than the previous year. He said the Cabinet Committee should hold meetings on daily basis to review security arrangements and the implementation of the security plan.

He was presiding over a meeting to review security arrangements for Muharram ul Haram, on Monday today. Provincial Ministers Rana Sanaullah Khan, Col. (retd) Shuja Khanzada, Haroon Sultan, and other officers concerned were present. The chief minister said Pakistan was passing through the most critical phase of its history and facing terrorism and other serious challenges. He said nothing could be more important than maintenance of law order therefore maximum attention has been paid in this direction. He said a separate anti-terrorism force was being established while police were also being equipped with latest weapons.

The chief minister directed that additional police force in plainclothes be deputed at hotels, railway stations and other places while a watchful eye be kept on suspects during Muharram.

He said that Youm-e-Ashoor processions be monitored through CCTV and these cameras be kept completely functional. He directed that a four tier security cordon be formed around Majalis and processions and conclusion of the mourning processions within the fixed time be ensured. The CM further directed that senior police officers should accompany mourning processions and clearing of the routes be ensured.

He said that law enforcement agencies should maintain a close coordination with each other so that immediate and effective action could be taken in case of any untoward incident. He further directed that provocative literature be confiscated and stern action be taken against elements involved in wall- chalking promoting religious hatred.

The chief minister directed that special teams be formed in this regard which should take prompt action. He also issued instructions for strict implementation of the ban on display of arms and directed that the code of conduct evolved in this regard be fully implemented.

Stressing the need for maintaining an atmosphere of religious harmony and brotherhood through divisional and district peace committees in their respective areas, he directed that these committees should maintain a close contact with Ulema and Mashaikh of all schools of thought.

Shahbaz announced placing of his helicopter and aircraft at the disposal of the cabinet committee and said that they could use them for monitoring security arrangements during Muharram. He expressed hope that an atmosphere of peace and law and order would prevail in the province during Muharram due to the efforts of security institutions and cooperation of Ulema, elected representatives and the masses.

Shahbaz orders free treatment of dengue patients: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has ordered free treatment of dengue patients at private hospitals and announced that Punjab government will bear all the expenses in this regard.

He directed elected representatives and provincial secretaries to pay visits on daily basis to personally review the measures for dengue eradication. He was presiding over a high level meeting on Tuesday to review dengue situation and the measures taken for eradication of this menace. Provincial Ministers Rana Sanaullah Khan, Khalil Tahir Sindhu, Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, Members National and Provincial Assemblies Pervaiz Malik, Mehr Ishtiaq Ahmed, Kh. Salman Rafique, Mian Marghoob Ahmed, Bao Akhtar, and officials concerned were present.

Addressing the meeting, the chief minister said dengue had resurfaced after one year and steps were being taken on war footing basis to control this menace for protecting human lives. He said in addition to government hospitals, free treatment facilities would be provided to dengue patients at private hospitals as well and provincial government will bear these expenses. He said government had set up a separate cell for elimination of dengue after 2011 and also arranged training of doctors, nurses and paramedical staff abroad on which a sum of Rs 100 million was spent.

He directed that full benefit should be taken of the capabilities of trained staff during anti-dengue campaign and they must be sent to the affected areas as master trainers.

The chief minister also issued instructions to continue the process of fogging and spray in high risk union councils and directed that spray should also be undertaken at the sites of Muharram congregations and the routes of processions. He directed concerned departments to further anti-dengue campaign with mutual consultation and cooperation and the flaws in the system be immediately removed.

The chief minister gave approval to formation of a committee to further improve the mechanism for eradication of dengue and directed the committee to review the matter from every angle and submit its report by the start of December.

He expressed displeasure over the poor sanitary arrangements at Sabzi Mandi and directed Solid Waste Management to immediately improve the situation and submit a report by the same evening. He also directed that cleanliness conditions at graveyards, junkyards and open spaces be further improved. He also issued instructions for de-silting of Satto Katla Drain and ordered that a report be submitted to him after clearing of drains.
