14 opponents join govt

MAZAR-I-SHARIF: Fourteen armed opponents joined the peace process here Sunday.
Led by their commander Mullah Ziaul Haq, the armed opponents, earlier active against the government in Balkh and Char Bolak districts, handed over their six weapons to the authorities concerned in a ceremony held at the house of a Wolesi Jirga member, Muhammad Akhtar in Mazar-i-Sharif, the Balkh security in-charge Abdul Razzaq Qadri told the Afghan Islamic Press.
Their joining would improve security of Jawzjan-Marzar-i-Sharif highway, he added.
He went on to say a clash took place between Mullah Ziaul Haq and other commanders of the armed opponents in Nowarid Wich Wani village in Char Bolak district over personal differences last night.
Three local commanders of the armed opponents identified as Mullah Hassan, Mullah Baqillah and Mullah Safari were killed and several more injured in the gunfight, he said.
Meanwhile, the Balkh district chief, Taimur Shah Paeez told media their information indicated 10 Taliban had been killed in the clash. Addressing the ceremony, member of the Woelsi Jirga's committee on peace jirga, Muhammad Akhtar said 200 armed opponents had joined the government after formation of the peace committee.
He said efforts were underway to motivate more armed opponents to join the government.
