With IAEA's help, Pakistan using N-tech in many fields: PM Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said that Pakistan with the help of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was making use of nuclear technology in several areas, including power production, medicine, agriculture, food preservation and water management for the benefit of its people.
Talking to the IAEA Director General Yukiyo Amino at the PM House, the premier said, "Given Pakistan's severe energy crisis, our Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) is actively expanding its power production potential."
The prime minister said that Pakistan has very close cooperation with IAEA since 1957, under the 'Atoms for Peace' initiative. "We value this cooperation for peaceful uses of nuclear technology," he added.
The prime minister said that Pakistan is committed nuclear non-proliferation state. "All our current nuclear power plants as well as research reactors are under IAEA safeguards and all obligations are being fulfilled adequately," he added.
He appreciated the positive role played by the Agency in the development of peaceful use of nuclear technology in Pakistan, for human resource development in various scientific disciplines as well as establishing R&D facilities at different centres in the country. He told that PAEC has benefited significantly from IAEA's programme on Cancer Therapy and Control in member states.
Every year, a large number of our scientists and engineers benefit from IAEA sponsored activities under National and Regional Projects and share their knowledge and experience in specific fields. "Similarly, our experts render valuable services to other IAEA member states," he added. The government of Pakistan values its relationship with IAEA and hoped that this cooperation shall be strengthened in future, he said.
DG IAEA appreciated Pakistan's commitment to use of nuclear energy for benefit of its people and extended his support for the cause.
