19 June, 2007
KABUL: Seven school children have been killed in a U.S.-led air strike in eastern Afghanistan.
A statement from the coalition command said a number of militants were also killed in the raid in Paktika province near Pakistan.
The children are understood to have been students at a madrassa, or Islamic school, at the targeted compound, a suspected al-Qaeda hide-out.
Elsewhere, three U.S. soldiers and an Afghan interpreter were killed Sunday around 1:30 p.m. when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Kandahar province, Afghanistan.
Another coalition soldier was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade while conducting combat operations in Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan Sunday at around 3 p.m. Three Afghan National Army soldiers were injured in the attack and are being treated at a nearby coalition medical facility.
