FAISALABAD: Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP) chief and Sunni Ettehad Council (SEC) chairman Sahibzada Fazal Kareem passed away after a protracted illness on Monday. He was 58.

Kareem was admitted to Allied Hospital Faisalabad on April 4 following a liver disorder. He has left behind four sons – Hamid Raza, Hussain Raza, Hassan Raza and Mohsin Raza – and a daughter.

He was born on October 24, 1954 in Faisalabad. His father, Muhaddis-e-Azam Pakistan Sardar Ahmad Qadri, was a leading scholar and ran the Mazhar-e-Islam Jamia Rizvia seminary in Jhang Bazaar.

Fazal was elected an MPA and an MNA twice, and he had also served as the provincial religious affairs minister from 1997 to 1999.

His funeral will be held in the Dhobi Ghaat Ground at 10am today (Tuesday).

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari, Caretaker PM Mir Hazar Khan Khoso and leaders of various political and religious parties have expressed their heartfelt grief and sorrow over the demise of the SIC chairman. They lauded the role of the deceased for the development and prosperity of the country.
