ISLAMABAD: Sindh Police has arrested Sikander Jatoi, father of Shahrukh Jatoi, the main accused in the Shahzeb murder case, from the premises of the Supreme Court.

Sikander had appeared in the apex court on Thursday, but the court rejected his plea to not apprehend him. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry hearing the sou motu case regarding the killing of a DSP's son in Karachi has asked the father of the main accused to cooperate with the police in the investigation. The court also gave six days to Sindh Police for the arrest of Shahrukh Jatoi, who escaped the country immediately after the murder and is in the UAE.

The CJP on Thursday questioned why the action had not been initiated against Waseem Khawaja, who is the deputy superintendent of police for Karachi's Darakhshan area, and in whose jurisdiction Shahzeb Khan was murdered in cold blood on the night between December 24 and 25. The chief justice also said that it had been reported that Khawaja was a blue eyed of an influential person; therefore, no action had been taken against him.

The court was told on Monday that Awais Tappi, the foster brother of the president, had wreaked havoc in the provincial revenue department and was behind the appointment of Waseem Khawaja as deputy superintendent of police in Karachi's Darakhshan area. Representing Sikander Jatoi, Abdul Hafeez Perzada told the bench told that his client was being harassed by the police unnecessarily and his cement factory and TV channel had been closed down.

He also stated that Sikandar Jatoi had obtained bail before arrest for one day from the Lahore High Court with a commitment that he would appear before the Supreme Court. Upon this, the court pointed out that it had not issued notice for his appearance, and he has to join an investigation with the police. Besides this, the court said it cannot give any further relief to him. The CJP clarified that the court had taken notice of this matter because obstacles were being created during the proceedings.

Meanwhile, the court was told that Interpol Dubai had confirmed that Shahrukh had been abroad since December 27, 2012. Sindh Police DIG Shahid Hasnat stated that Shahrukh Jatoi has been traced in Dubai, and efforts were being made to bring him back to Pakistan, and therefore, he requested the court to give some time. The chief justice observed that it meant that previously police had given a wrong statement in this regard. He said that law enforcement agencies had shown negligence in this case. Hearing of the case has been adjourned until January 16.

End.
