KARACHI: Gunmen shot dead a Shia scholar in central Karachi as he travelled on a busy road on Thursday, police said, in what appeared to be a sectarian attack.

Allama Taqi Hadi Naqvi, a cleric who was also an employee of the government educational board, was targeted as he returned home in a rickshaw. "He was riding in an auto rickshaw when two riders on a motorcycle shot him," police officer Afaq Ahmed told AFP. Hadi died on the spot as two of the bullets hit him in the face, the officer said, adding that the motive appeared to be sectarian. The killing has sparked an outcry from members of the city's Shia community.

Police said that four armed men riding two motorcycles opened fire on the rickshaw of Allama Naqvi. He was attacked on a road between KDA Chowrangi and Matric Board office in North Nazimabad. This was the second attack on Thursday in the city in which religious scholars were targeted. Earlier, a religious seminary administrator, Qari Ali Hassan, was shot dead.

Gunmen opened fire outside a seminary located at Abul Hassan Isfihani Road that killed two persons, Qari Ali and his son. According to police, the incident occurred at Abul Hassan Isfahani Road in the jurisdiction of Mubina Town Police Station. A passerby got injured in the firing.

End.
