11 February, 2010
ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Wednesday passed a unanimous resolution to acknowledge the historic victory of Pakistani female athlete Naseem Hameed in 100 meters event of the South Asian Games in Dhaka. The resolution, which was moved by Senator Raza Rabbani, called for extending financial assistance to Naseem Hameed, her encouragement and giving a job to her in a government or some autonomous organisation. Leader of the opposition in his speech said the Pakistani female athlete, who won the first ever gold medal in 100 meters women event, had demonstrated a soft image of the country at a time when it was hit by acts of terrorism. “Such sportswomen should enjoy backing and encouragement of the government,” he said. Senator Ishaq Dar said the concerned sports authorities should adopt a mechanism to support sports heroes so that parliament did not have to pass resolutions for this purpose. End.
