Religious choice in Afghanistan
25 March, 2006
KABUL, March 26 (Online): Afghanistan under the Taliban regime was not only a friendly home to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida but also a decidedly unfriendly place to live for anyone who was not a believer in the Taliban`s fundamentalist, super-restrictive, oppressive view of Islam.
All that was supposed to change when the United States and several allies, responding to the 9/11 attacks, invaded Afghanistan to cripple al-Qaida and drive out the Taliban. To a degree, the desired results have occurred. But Osama is still at large, al-Qaida still a threat and, in Afghanistan, vestiges of the Taliban version of Islam remain in law.
That religious conversion tale is not a hypothetical example. Right now, Abdul Rahman remains in an Afghan jail, accused of apostasy - converting from Islam to Christianity. (It happened 15 years ago and his own parents recently turned him in.) A government prosecutor called him a "microbe" and said he "should be killed." A judge on Afghanistan`s Supreme Court agreed, telling a French news agency that Rahman would receive the death penalty if he did not revert back to Islam.
There were reports coming from the Afghanistan Embassy in the United States that it was "too early" to rush to conclusions on Rahman, Supposedly, a judge was going to evaluate concerns raised "about the mental fitness of Mr. Rahman." That won`t do. What are they going to do, have mental competency tests in Afghanistan for everyone who chooses a religion that the remaining Taliban sympathizers don`t like?
President Bush and the leaders of Canada, Germany and Italy, who also have troops in Afghanistan, have objected strongly to this throwback to Talibanism. They need to continue to impress on Afghan President Hamid Karzai how seriously they view this abuse of basic human rights. In addition, Muslim leaders who believe in a tolerant, compassionate form of Islam, should condemn this cruel form of it. It is time these supposed converts to democracy begin acting the part.
End.

Almost Correct |
excellent article except for the comment suggesting that the Islamists calling for Rahman's death were "remaining Taliban supporters". In fact, cleric Abdul Raoulf, who was jailed three times for opposing the Taliban said "Rejecting Islam is insulting God. We will not allow God to be humiliated. This man must die." The ideology of Islamofascism is much greater than just those who support the Taliban, and this fact should be clarified.
