PESHAWAR: Local singer Wazir Khan Afridi was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Faqir Killay area, a suburb of Peshawar, on Wednesday, police said.

Wazir Khan Afridi was a renowned singer from the Khyber Agency, who has more than 40 albums. There were reports that after being displaced from Bara, Afridi was facing threats from militants who had asked him to stop singing or be ready to be killed. The reports also quoted Wazir Khan Afridi as saying that he had been abducted three times from Peshawar and was freed each time on the condition that he would not sing anymore.

Separately, at least two persons were injured in three separate hand grenade attacks in Bannu, Khyber Agency and North Waziristan Agency on Wednesday. According to official sources, militants hurled a hand grenade outside the house of a police official, Rafiullah, on DI Khan Road in Bannu. Rafiullah's father sustained injuries in the blast and was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

In another incident an explosion took place outside the house of an official of the Khassadar Force in Keti de Bazar in Tehsil Jamrud of Khyber Agency. The blast partially damaged the main gate of the house, however, fortunately there was no casualty. In the third incident unidentified militants attacked a school in Sarai Darpakhel in North Waziristan Agency with a hand grenade. One person was injured in the blast.
