Pakistan optimistic of winning chairmanship of G-77

NEW YORK, : Due to effective lobbying by President General Pervez Musharraf here there are strong chances that in the 61st meeting of the United Nations General Assembly Pakistan will be elected as the Chairman of G-77 . Diplomatic sources said that the chair of G-77 keeps revolving between the countries of South Africa and Latin America. It was learnt that this time around Pakistan is quite seriously lobbying to get the chairmanship of the G-77. Many countries in the group have assured Pakistan of their support. Voting for the chairman seat will take place during the ongoing UN meeting. President General Pervez Musharraf will meet the Heads of State of the member countries and will try to buy their support in this regard the President is said to use his personal influence as well. If Pakistan manages to get the chairmanship of G-77 than it can reap many benefits as G-77 is an influential group and many influential countries are members of it. President General Pervez Musharraf is lobbying for the coveted position along with Pakistani envoy in New York, Munir Akram. So far no other Asian country has nominated a candidate for the chairmanship of G-77.
