ISLAMABAD, April 17(Online): Secretary General Pakistan Muslim League Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed has said that Pakistan and Kuwait have very close and friendly relations based on common bonds of religion, heritage and traditions.

Addressing a reception hosted by him for a media delegation from Kuwait here at Parliament House, Senator Mushahid said both the countries extended help and support to each other in difficult times.

Referring to 1991 Kuwait-Iraq war, Senator Mushahid said when Saddam Hussain attacked Kuwait, Pakistan raised its voice against the Iraqi oppression and occupation of Kuwait. He said Pakistan was of the view that it is violation of national integrity of Kuwait and United Nations charter. He said Pakistan while raising the voice against this attack said that sovereignty of all the countries should be ensured. Senator Mushahid said Kuwait, extended full support to Pakistan in 1971 war and on the occasion of nuclear test.

He said in the middle east, Kuwait is a beacon of light for other Muslim countries due to its progressive and enlightened attitude and policies. Mushahid said democracy is the destiny of the Muslim states and referred the example of Kuwait and Pakistan, where democratic institutions are working effectively.

He said both Kuwait and Pakistan have similar views and common approach on many international issues including Palestine and Iran.

He said Pakistan and Kuwait wanted that the issue of Iran should be resolved through negotiations and dialogue as the use of force is not a solution to this problem.

Senator Mushahid said Pakistan and Kuwait, have common approach on the issue of Iraq that there should be peace in the area. He said Pakistan opposed the war by international forces against Iraq as it is violation of UN charter and without the approval of the world body.

Regarding Pakistan’s response to Palestine, Senator Mushahid said as Hamas has been taken the power in Palestine after fair, free and transparent elections, therefore, they have the right to rule. He said the world should not have double standards or yard-sticks to judge the democratic process in different countries.

Referring to the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), Mushahid said it was also being made a vibrant body to raise the voices of the Muslims. He said the 15 member Commission of Eminent Persons of the OIC in which he is also a member from Pakistan, has been making efforts to reorganized the organization for playing effective role in the world.

Mushahid referring to growth of journalism in Kuwait said, Kuwait’s press is very living press. Appreciating the role of press in promoting democratic values, Senator Mushahid said media of Pakistan and Kuwait have been playing important role in promoting democratic traditions. He said the press of the two countries was also playing important role in promoting relations between the two countries.

He said the biggest challenge before the press, especially in the Muslim countries was to bridge the gap between the Muslim elites and the Muslim street .

He said the Muslim states also face the challenge of extremism, terrorism and sectarians. Mushahid said there is no room to promote sects, religious and ethnic groups and urged the media to project tolerance, harmony and co-existence.

He said Pakistan has also vibrant democratic institutions and added that out of 100 member house of Senate, there are 42 opposition members who are playing very effective role in the democratic process,

Fatima Hussain, the head of the Kuwaiti Media delegation thanked the PML Secretary General Senator Mushahid Hussain for arranging the reception to provide a chance for interaction with representative of media and parliamentarians.
