NAs admn floats demands in connection of Bhasha dam construction

ISLAMABAD: Northern Areas administration floated set of demands to center government regarding the construction of Bhasha dam including hiring advisor according to its wishes, establishing committee containing the representation of the areas and giving 60 percent employment to the locals. The demand was made in the meeting held between Federal Minister Northern Areas Major Retd Tahir Iqbal and deputy chief executive Northern areas, Hunza Rani and Mir here the other day. Sources said that the deputy chief executive Northern areas, Hunza Rani and Mir made demand it the meeting with the federal minister calling for the appointment of bhasha dam according to their consent. "The committee comprising the elected representatives of Goharabad, Kanair and Hadar and administration of Northern areas should be constituted for the rehabilitation of the affected people by the construction of bhasha dam," they demanded in the meeting according to the sources. They further demanded of the federal government that as many as 60 percent people of the local people should be hired for the construction of bahasha dam. They also asked the center to invest the money of the royalty of bhasha dam on the development and prosperity of the areas where the dam is to be constructed. Government has allocated from the PSDP as many as Rs 10 billion for the construction of five big dams including the bhasha and munda and kalabagh dam from the fiscal year. The rest of the required money for these dams will be acquired from World Bank, Asian Development Bank and JICA. German company Lemhyer has started to work out formally on the detailed engineering design of bhasha dam and it will complete engineering design by March 2007. The sources noted that the feasibility report of the Bhasha dam had been completed and however it had not been submitted to the government so far.
