ISLAMABAD: The federal and provincial governments on Thursday decided to inform the Supreme Court of the factors that have delayed the implementation of a Lahore High Court (LHC) order regarding the sale of sugar at Rs 40 per kilogramme in the country.

This decision was made in a high-level meeting, presided by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, to take stock of the sugar situation in the country.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah were also present.

The meeting resolved to highlight the difficulties the government was facing in implementing the LHC decision.

It also decided that immediate remedial steps would be required to ensure an adequate and uninterrupted supply of sugar on Eidul Fitr, for which an application would be submitted to the Supreme Court today (Friday).

The SC had earlier directed the government to implement the LHC decision ordering it to ensure that sugar was sold at Rs 40 per kg in the open market until a SC decision on the issue.

The meeting, however, failed to reach any final decision regarding the fixing of a uniform price in the country before approaching the Supreme Court for a review.

Minister for Finance Shaukat Tareen, Minister for Petroleum Naveed Qamar, Minister for Food and Agriculture Nazar Gondal, Minister for Industries and Production Manzoor Wattoo, Minister of State for Law and Justice Afzal Sandhu, Attorney General of Pakistan Latif Khosa, Punjab Minister for Food Naeem Kamran, NWFP Minister for Food Muhammad Shuja Khan, Balochistan Minister for Food Ali Madad Jatak, all provincial chief secretaries, secretaries of Commerce, Finance, Food and Agriculture, Industries and Law, the Sindh food secretary; the Punjab industries Secretary, the Punjab food secretary, senior lawyer Khawaja Haris, and the Utility Stores Corporation managing director were also present at the meeting.

End.
