05 November, 2009
ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet on Wednesday approved the ‘Sugar Policy 2009-10’, which imposed a ban on the export of gurr, in addition to allowing the government to import 500,000 tonnes of raw sugar and 500,000 tonnes of refined sugar. Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira told reporters that the country’s demand for sugar stood at about 4.2 million tonnes a year, but local production amounted to 3 million tonnes. He said raw and refined sugar would be imported to meet the deficit of 1.2 million tonnes, and the government would maintain 500,000 tonnes of strategic reserves of sugar for market intervention as and when required. End.
