05 September, 2006
KABUL: The newly-appointed Attorney General Abdul Jabar Sabit has constituted a commission comprising prosecutors and lawyers to review cases of all prisoners imprisoned at the Pul-i-Charkhi Jail.
The AG issued the directives during a visit to the jail Monday morning. He said a 20-member delegation would review case of each prisoner to see the charges against him and the punishment awarded by the court.
The commission had been directed to present its report to office of attorney general in three days, Sabit told reporters. He said the report and the action on it would be brought in the limelight after 72 hours.
Sabit said, during his brief visit, they had discovered some 20 prisoners were still under detention despite the expiry of their term in jail. Some prisoners complained to the AG that their term in jail had exceeded the term awarded by the courts.
The notorious Pul-i-Charkhi Jail is housing 2,500 prisoners. They also included 69 women and 53 foreigners.
End.
