ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said that the three pillars of the state must work in harmony in the larger national interest.

The Prime Minister said this while talking to a delegation of the Executive Committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) led by Advocate Khawaja Naveed Ahmed, Vice President SCBA, which called on him at the PM's House Saturday afternoon.

The Prime Minister said the government respects the judiciary as a very important pillar of the state. Likewise, the supremacy of parliament, which comprises elected representatives of the people and represents their sentiments and aspirations as reflected in the laws needs to be respected. Parliament, he said, frames laws and has the legal authority to amend or change them if need be.

The Prime Minister said judiciary has an important role to provide equitable justice to the people in a timely manner, which is also a priority for the government and added that the government will continue providing all facilities to ensure provision of speedy justice to the masses by the judiciary.

The Prime Minister said that the government believes in freedom of expression but laws and norms of civil society must be adhered to.

The members of the delegation assured the Prime Minister that majority of the members of the SCBA disapproved of the irrational and unlawful behaviour of some of the lawyers in the past.

The Prime Minister said that the legal community enjoys respect in the Pakistani society and lawyers must become icons of civil and disciplined behaviour in a way that their conduct becomes a model for the entire society.

Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Mr. Zahid Hamid and Attorney General, Justice (Retd.) Malik Mohammad Qayyum also attended the meeting.
