Agha Siraj Durrani elected Sindh Assembly speaker

KARACHI: PPP leader, Agha Siraj Durrani of the Pakistan Peoples' Party on Thursday took oath as 16th speaker of the Sindh Assembly.
MQM leader Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hassan received 48 votes while PML-N candidate Ifranullah Marwat secured 18 votes. Two votes were rejected.
Outgoing speaker Nisar Khoro administered oath to Agah Siraj Durrani who has become the sixteenth speaker of the provincial assembly.
The PPP had nominated Agha Siraj Durrani for the office of the Speaker and Syeda Shehla Raza for the Deputy Speaker.
Outgoing speaker Nisar Khoro administered oath to Agha Siraj Durrani as speaker of the august house, the oath was taken in Sindhi language.
MQM's Khawaja Izharul Hassan was competing for the slot of Speaker and Heer Ismail Soho for Deputy Speaker.
Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), which emerged victorious in the May 11 polls at the centre, suggested Irfanullah Marwat's name for speaker and Nusrat Saher representing Pakistan Muslim League – Functional (PML-F) as deputy speaker.
Irfanullah Marwat of PML-N also contested for the slot and begged 18 votes
Despite gaining in centre, the PML-N is well short of the required majority in the Sindh Assembly. Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) refrained from fielding or supporting any candidates in today's secret ballot.
