NEW DELHI, July 30 (Online): Indian treasury bench on Friday scored points over the opposition demanding leader of Opposition and former deputy premier L.K. Advani's resignation after he was charged in the Babri mosque razing case.

The UPA, which had been on the defensive over "tainted ministers" in its ranks since taking power in May, pounced on Advani a day after an Uttar Pradesh court framed charges against him in the 1992 demolition of the Babri mosque by Hindu activists, reports IANS.

Interestingly, it were the members of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), the leading Left party, which led the charge against the opposition.

The treasury benches continued to demand Advani's scalp after reassembling post-lunch, plunging the lower house into deeper turmoil and causing another 25-minute adjournment.

Members of the Left and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) asked Advani to step down on "moral grounds".

Advani and other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have been accused of inciting communal passions, leading to the mosque razing that changed the face of India's polity and politics.

"Advani should resign as he is 'tainted' with charges," RJD MPs shouted, with Left and Congress MPs also joining in.
