PTI leader Faqir Jamshed among 3 killed in bomb blast

05 August, 2014

PESHAWAR: A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader was among three people killed in a bomb blast on Monday in Dera Ismail Khan District, police said.

PTI leader Faqir Jamshed and his two guards were killed in the bombing which is believed to have been carried out remotely, in Kulachi Tehsil of Dera Ismail Khan where KP minister for law Israrullah Gandapur was killed in a suicide attack last year. No group has claimed responsibility for the roadside explosion.

However, Kulachi Tehsil is regarded as "stronghold" of the Waziristan Taliban, according to local journalists. "The PTI leader was on his way to Dera city when the roadside bomb went off," a police official told local media. "The explosion occurred near the vehicle in which Jamshed was travelling, on Muddhi road."

Faqir Jamshed was denied PTI tickets during 2013 elections and he had lost both seats he contested as an independent candidate. However, he upheld his loyalty for the PTI. According to Kulachi locals he was considered a spiritual leader.

A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it was too early to say Faqir Jamshed was targeted for the reason that the PTI had supported the military operation in North Waziristan against the Taliban and al Qaeda.

He said intelligence reports had forewarned of such types of incidents after Eid holidays, and Faqir Jamshed's killing could be the beginning of a long campaign the militants might have planned in response to the military operation.

End.
