ISLAMABAD: Paying tributes to former army chief General (retd) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and former chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Thursday said the tradition of welcoming those assuming new responsibilities and making controversial those leaving their government offices should end now.

He said there was always room for criticism; however, those holding an important government office especially come under criticism. "This tradition of welcoming everybody who is arriving and condemning those who are leaving should be ended."

In a statement, Nisar said it was the mandate of parliament to review the performance of the heads of national organisations and criticise them, but those who did good work should be appreciated.

He said the new ways adopted by Gen (retd) Kayani and Justice (retd) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry should be further reformed and for that 'we have to play our role'.He said the heads of two state institutions retired recently after completing their terms of service, adding, "I pay tribute to former army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry while standing in this House."

The minister said when the former heads of Pakistan Army and judiciary assumed their offices, conditions in the country were very grave. He said the image of the army was damaged during the eight-year period of General Musharraf, as he sacrificed the army for his personal interests.

"General Kayani restored the dignity of army, supported the democratic process and ensured respect for democratic and civil institutions at every stage, including the elections," he added.Ch. Nisar said during his five years as the Leader of the Opposition and five months as interior minister, he closely watched General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and found him a patriotic Pakistani and a true and real soldier.

The interior minister said true and good people should be praised and "I pay tribute to General Kayani for his exemplary performance".Chaudhry Nisar said nobody could disagree with this fact that the period of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was a historic era of independent judiciary.

He said the chief Justice made individuals and institutions responsible for eradication of corruption, stability of democracy and relief to the oppressed and helpless people, for which no example could be found before."I applaud the heads of these two institutions for their national services for years and I welcome those who have come now."

End.
