Srinagar: In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown was observed, today, to show solidarity with illegally detained Hurriyet leader, Dr Muhammad Qasim Fakhtoo, who has spent more than twenty years in different jails of the territory and India.

Call for the shutdown had been given by the veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front and was supported by pro-liberation leaders and organisations as well as the Kashmir High Court Bar Association.

Shops, business establishments, schools, banks and courts remained closed in Srinagar and other towns while traffic was off the road.

The High Court of the occupied territory had recently dismissed the petition seeking release of Dr Fakhtoo ruling that he will be kept in jail till he is alive.

The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in a media interview in Srinagar said that the Kashmir dispute demanded urgent attention and could not be sidelined or put in a cold storage. He reiterated his demand for inclusion of Kashmiris in the dialogue process between Pakistan and India to make it meaningful and result-oriented.

The leaders of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front and the JKLF-R at separate functions at the Martyrs' Graveyard, Eidgah, in Srinagar paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of Aali Kadal on their 20th martyrdom anniversary, today. They said that the sacrifices of Kashmiri martyrs would not be allowed to go waste and their mission would be accomplished at all costs.

In Islamabad, the AJK chapter of the forum patronised by Syed Ali Gilani in a meeting termed the ruling of the High Court of occupied Kashmir against Hurriyet leader, Dr Muhammad Qasim Fakhtoo, as political vendetta. The meeting was presided over by Convenor, Ghulam Muhammad Safi, and attended among others by Muhammad Farooq Rehmani.

End.
