Anti-India protests, strike in Sopore town

23 October, 2012

Srinagar: In occupied Kashmir, amid complete shutdown anti-India demonstrations and clashes between Indian paramilitary personnel and protesters continued in Sopore town for the second consecutive day, today.

The protests erupted in Sopore on Sunday after Indian troops martyred two youth and destroyed three residential houses during a violent military operation at Shalapora in the town. Thousands of people attended funerals of the martyred youth. The mourners on the occasion demanded pullout of Indian troops from the territory without any further delay.

Hurriyet leaders Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Javed Ahmad Mir and JKLF leader Bashir Ahmad Butt visited Bijbehara to pay tributes to the martyrs who fell victim to Indian state terrorism during a peaceful demonstration on 22nd October in 1993. They reiterated that the struggle would continue till accomplishment of the martyrs' mission.

The puppet authorities placed senior APHC leader Shabbir Ahmad Shah under house arrest to prevent him from visiting the area.

The veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani in a statement issued in Srinagar while paying tributes to the martyrs of Bijbehara said that the martyrs laid their lives to get freedom from Indian yoke. He reaffirmed the Kashmiris' resolve to continue their struggle till securing their inalienable right to self-determination.

On this day in 1993, over 40 innocent Kashmiris were killed in Bijbehara, when Indian troops opened fire on the demonstrators who were protesting against the military siege of Srinagar's Hazratbal Shrine.

The JKLF-R at a function presided over by its Chairman Farooq Ahmad Dar in Srinagar, the All Parties Hurriyet Conference AJK Chapter in a meeting chaired by its Convenor Mehmood Ahmad Saghar and Hurriyet leader Muhammad Farooq Rehmani in a statement in Islamabad also eulogised the sacrifices of the Bijbehara martyrs.
