10 June, 2014
KARACHI: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Monday said all assets of national importance were secured at the Karachi airport while two to three aircraft were partially damaged during the militant attack.
Talking to media persons at the Old Terminal of Karachi Airport, Nisar said the militants hadn't attacked the Karachi airport but its Old Terminal and their target were the aircraft. He said the army, Airport Security Force, Rangers and other law-enforcement agencies foiled the attack in a joint operation.
He said 19 persons had lost their lives and 29 others got injured. He said the search and rescue operation, including the search for those trapped inside the cold storage, was continuing. Nisar said a total of 10 militants attacked the airport in two groups of five militants each, using two separate routes.
He said the Rangers responded to the attack within seven minutes while the army reached the troubled spot in 20 minutes. The interior minister said three of the militants had blown themselves up while seven were killed by the security personnel.
He said the attackers seemed to be foreigners while verification of weapons used by the attackers was yet to be done. He said a particular country might be behind the attack but it was yet to be verified. He said the authorities had been able to find and collect certain evidence about who was behind the attack.
