Detail: Portugal’s regular number one since 2001, Ricardo surprisingly lost his place at the 2002 FIFA World Cup™ to Vitor Baia and spent the tournament sitting on the bench.
Since then he has been unchallenged as Portugal’s goalkeeper and played all six matches at UEFA Euro 2004, where he is best remembered for scoring the winning penalty in the quarter-final shoot-out against England.
Ricardo suffered the disappointment of being the only player to lose in the final against Greece and then lose in the UEFA Cup final with Sporting Club de Portugal the next season. He won the Portuguese league title with his previous club Boavista in 2001.
