The son of national coach Ilija Petkovic, central defender Dusan Petkovic was a late call up into the Serbia & Montenegro squad. The OFK Belgrade star was not in the original 23-man party but was handed his chance when striker Mirko Vucinic suffered a knee injury during the European Under-21 Championship. The decision to name the 31-year-old in the squad was a major surprise, not just because he was not a like-for-like replacement for Vucinic, but also because he did not feature during the World Cup qualifying campaign. The former Wolfsburg and Spartak Moscow defender had won 12 international caps before his shock call-up, but none of them came in a competitive match.
