Iranian Nuclear Conflict

Washington accuses Tehran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to build a nuclear bomb. Iran denies this, saying its nuclear program is merely geared towards generating electricity. Though, US Sec of State Condoleeza Rice says that attack on Iran on nuclear issue would be the last option, diplomatic and political circles do not simply rule out the possibility for the same.
Iran suspended its uranium enrichment activities in November last to create confidence and to avoid UN Security council sanctions, but Tehran says maintaining the temporary freeze depends on progress in ongoing talks with Briton, Germany and France, who are negotiating on behalf of the European Union.
The EU has demanded a written assurance from Tehran that it will abandon its nuclear program, but the Islamic republic says it will never agree to a permanent halt on enriching uranium, a technology it says Tehran is entitled to under the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Political experts are of the view that the Iranian government will not bow to the US and the EU demand, as it cannot risk its popularity in the forthcoming presidential elections due in June 2005.
