Yasin arrested in Srinagar for anti-poll campaign

31 October, 2014

SRINAGAR: Liberation Front Chairman Yasin Malik arrested by the 'state' authorities for leading a campaign to boycott assembly election, scheduled to be held in Indian-held Jammu Kashmir next month, Indian TV channels reported on Thursday.

India's Zee News channel reported that supporters of the arrested Kashmiri leader gathered in large numbers on streets of Srinagar, shouting anti-India slogans. Shortly after the announcement regarding the five-phased assembly polls in the held state by the Indian Election Commission, the Kashmiri leaders had called for boycotting the so-called electoral exercise and urged the voters to stay away from it.

Hurriyat Conference leaders said that the announcement of the election was an insult to the injuries of the flood-affected people of the state. Yasin said that majority of people were in distress but these inhuman pro-India political parties want elections to grab power. "They don't care about people who lost shelter as lakhs of people are homeless," he said.

He said that the polls were held during normalcy but entire state faced devastation due to recent floods. Kashmiri leader Shabbir Ahmad Shah termed the announcement as the height of political opportunism. The Election Commission had decided to go ahead with farcical assembly polls in flood-devastated state and announced a five-phased schedule between November 23 and December 20.
