Dr. Farrukh Saleem in his excellent analysis (Comment - The News 9 April) rightly attributes the 'powerlessness' of the Muslim to the 'lack of education' among them.

I couldn't agree more with him. However, education to the mullah who holds such strong a sway on the lives of the masses, is just confined to the reading of the holy book (nazra - of course without understanding the meaning of a word of it) and few other deeni books primarily on the rituals of Islam.  This entitles him to be an all knowing aalim.  He is least concerned with the knowledge of other sciences and disciplines of education. On the top of it, he preaches day in and day out that this world is a temporary abode for the human mortals and it is world hereafter which will be for ever.  Therefore, the true Muslims must not attach themselves with it by constructing buildings (houses) and amassing other worldly goods, implying not to progress. Unfortunately, he has Quranic Ayah to quote in support of it, which I am sure he does so out of the context.  Muslims must, therefore, not only acquire an all encompassing education but make full use of such knowledge for their advancement in THIS world also.

Education leads to empowerment

Education leads to Empowerment and this holds true for all, and not only for one region or relgion. As we open up more to the different cultures and different philosophies, we get to know more about the world and begin to see merit in other's customs and practices which we have long condemned as sinful or wrong. how can you decide unless you know about it?

regarding mullahs islam and pakistan

i think pakistan should have a central islamic board consisting of educated sunni and shia scholars. And their should be a certification or liscense to teach religon in pakistan because of the dangers of wrongful teaching to jahil villagers n poor people who have no knowledge. The requirements should require education at some level atleast. Second while ur at it their should be a zakat fund under the national islamic board.
