KARACHI: Sindh Rangers on Monday foiled a plot to help escape some dangerous terrorists from Central Jail Karachi.

The rangers unearthed a tunnel being made in a house in Ghousia Colony adjacent to the jail and busted the terrorist network, said Rangers Colonel Tahir Mehmood while addressing a press conference on Monday.

He said the rangers took prompt action on intelligence information about the jailbreak plan and raided the house from where the tunnel leading into the jail was being dug. The Rangers arrested some suspects from the house who were involved in digging the tunnel and after interrogation their accomplices were also arrested from various parts of the city, Col Tahir said.

"The tunnel was dig up to 10 feet through a water tank of the home. The tunnel was just 10 meters away to complete its 55 metre distance to the barracks of central jail," he informed.

The officer said that some elements from banned terrorists' outfit were behind the plot.

He said a huge cache of weapons and some technical gadgets were also recovered from the site. He declined to share complete details with the media, saying investigation was underway and disclosure of any sensitive detail could hamper the probe.

Disclosing the plot, Rangers official said they unearthed a tunnel dug by terrorists at a nearby house to enter and attack the prison.

He said that 44-meter long underground tunnel was prepared, adding the terrorists had purchased the house some time ago.

Colonel Tahir said that the operation was carried out on a tip off from security agencies.

Colonel Tahir appealed public to inform law enforcers about information of criminals, if they have any.

In view of the incident, the officials concerned have been asked to expedite the high security prison project for which Rs 1.49 billion have already been allocated.

Sindh Chief Secretary Sajjad Saleem Hotiana at a meeting said land has been acquired for high security prison model project at Jamshoro. He said the project should be accomplished as soon as possible. He formed an inquiry committee to probe the tunnel case. Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has approved the committee.

End.
