Taliban claim killing, wounding eight cops

SHABARGAH/ LASHKARGAH: Taliban on Saturday claimed they had killed and wounded eight police after an attack in Gosfandi district of Sar-e-Pul province late yesterday. Security officials, however, said the attack left a civilian dead and four attackers wounded. Taliban attacked police posts in Gosfandi district, killing a cop and wounding seven others, Qari Muhammad Yousaf Ahmadi, spokesman for Taliban, told Afghan Islamic Press. Said Jahangir, security chief of Sar-e-Pul province, confirmed attack on a police post in Gosfandi district centre but said a civilian was killed and four Taliban wounded during the firefight. He did not disclose if the civilian was killed by police or Taliban fire. Meanwhile, a rocket hit a house in Gereskh district, killing a girl and wounding six others occupants while a civilian was killed in a landmine explosion in Marjah district of Helmand province, governor’s office said Saturday. A motorcar hit a landmine in Sistani area of Marjah district this morning, leaving a civilian dead, said a press release issued by Helmand governor’s press office. In another development, it said, a rocket fired by anti-government gunmen struck a house in Haidarabad area of Gereshk district last night, killing a girl and wounding six other members of a family, it said. Elsewhere, security forces arrested seven gunmen in Nahr-e-Siraj, Marjah, Nad Ali and Lashkargah district, the statement said, adding 15 weapons, wireless sets and several other equipment were also recovered.
