State institutions diverting country from its real path: Fazl

KARAK: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said on Sunday that the state institutions, bureaucracy and the establishment were diverting the country from its real path. He said combined efforts were needed to douse the fire which has been set alight in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He termed the sit-in staged by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as a drama and alleged that Imran Khan was damaging the consensus created by the All Parties Conference (APC) on holding peace talks with the Taliban. Addressing a public gathering here, the Maulana said the negotiation process with the militants had been suspended and should be resumed.
He said the tribal jirga formed by his party for peace talks was acceptable to all the sides and even the APC hosted by the JUI-F in February this year had reposed trust in it, but the US drone attack killing the TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsud changed the scenario altogether.
Fazlur Rehman said the federal government had no alternative to the tribal jirga formed by the JUI-F and it would be convened on November 28.The JUI-F chief said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was a sensitive province and his party's effort to form the provincial government was misconstrued as his desire for power. He said he wanted to bring the federal and provincial governments on the same page to establish peace in this volatile region. He said the JUI-F wanted to establish Islamic rule in the country through democratic struggle. He added that his party didn't agree with the idea of implementing Shariah through force.
The Maulana said the chief justice of the Supreme Court was insisting on holding the local government elections, but there was no answer to the question as to why the recommendations of the Islamic Ideology Council had not been implemented for the past 40 years.
Rejecting the outcome of the May 11 general elections, he alleged that the results in the province had been manipulated to turn the majority into minority.
Fazlur Rehman said the JUI-F was still a viable political force in the province and it could stop Nato supplies, but it would not do so as such a move would undermine the consensus on peace talks with the Taliban.
He alleged that on the one hand the PTI-led coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had taken $500 million funds from the US, but on the other it was blocking the Nato supplies to Afghanistan.
The JUI-F chief claimed that the PTI was promoting Western culture and had given education, health and development projects to non-governmental organisations. He said he called Imran Khan the agent of the West as he was sponsoring Western civilisation. Former chief minister Akram Durrani also addressed the gathering and criticised the ruling PTI and Jamaat-e-Islami. He claimed the PTI was incapable of running the provincial government.
