KARACHI: The Karachi Electric Supply Company's management has said that at least six of its employees, including females, were injured due to stone pelting by utility's workers as the besieged staff members were leaving the KESC head office building on Monday night after police action against the protesters laying siege to the building.
Earlier in the day, pitched battles between KESC security guards, police and protesting workers at the KESC head office in Gizri left at least 12 people injured. After prolonged situation of violence, firing, and confrontation at the KESC head office, the protesting employees laid siege to the building in protest. The KESC employees have been protesting against non-release of their due salaries for the last several months.
The KESC spokesman said that due to siege at the head office building, over 300 staff members and officials of the KESC, including 50 females, remained besieged inside the head office building for over 12 hours and their evacuation was made possible only after due intervention and action by the police late in the night.
The KESC spokesman said that earlier in the day, the KESC security guards only resorted to aerial firing when the protesters tried to barge into the head office building from the gate on the side of the Gizri grid station.
Due to the late night police action, several of the protesting workers and office-bearers of the KESC Labour Union were detained by the law-enforcers. Leaders of the KESC Labour Union also moved to undisclosed location after the police action.
