Showers in Karachi reduce heat intensity

KARACHI: Metropolis received light showers on Thursday afternoon giving citizens a sigh of relief who were suffering from intense heat for the past one-week.
People troubled by scorching heat along with prolonged power outages, took to the streets enjoying rain and a large number of people also visited Seaview. Rainwater inundated several low-lying areas especially the downtown. Many areas in the city witnessed massive traffic jams, especially Saddar town, M A Jinnah Road, Merewether Tower and other arteries.
Pakistan Meteorological Department Sindh has predicted more rains for Friday. On-duty Met Official Jan Muhammad told our sources that New Karachi, Korangi, Shah Latif Town, Orangi Town, Ghulshan-e-Hadid, Saddar, DHA and Baldia town received light showers on Thursday. He said that Saddar received 2mm, Airport area and New Karachi 3mm, while North Nazimabad received 3.2 mm rain.
The met official further said that the maximum rain was witnessed in Baldia town and Ghulshan-e-Hadid, however he said that due to the absence of the rain gauges, met office was unable to record exact rain in these areas. Pre-monsoon system entered the province on Wednesday, after which met office had predicted light showers in Karachi and other parts of the province till Monday.
On the other hand, authorities of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) said that they have completed rain emergency precautionary measures. Chief Engineer KWSB Asadullah Khan is directed to coordinate with Commissioner Karachi, Administrator KMC, All Deputy Commissioners and other utility departments to take necessary steps.
KWSB officers are directed to work on rain emergency under Khan's supervision. Moreover, Public Complaint Centre at Karsaz has been transformed into Rain Emergency Centre, said KWSB statement. This centre would work round the clock to resolve public complaints with the help of higher officials. KWSB has also established rain emergency centres in all zonal offices.
Moreover, Managing Director KWSB Misbahuddin Farid has asked DMD Technical Services, Chief Engineers, Superintendent Engineers and other concerned staff to stay on high alert. He also cancelled holidays of all operational staff due to the rain emergency and directed them to work in three shifts.
Farid also directed all chief engineers to take alternative measures to tackle any adverse situation during the rain. Generators, machinery and other equipment must be kept ready to ensure rapid solutions, he added.
