Sherry Rehman next on militants’ hit list
03 March, 2011
ISLAMABAD: Intelligence Agencies on Wednesday informed the government to immediately enhance security of MNA Sherry Rehman.
Following gruesome murder of Minority Minister Shahbaz Bhatti after killing of former governor Punjab Salman Taseer earlier this year in the federal capital, the agencies have reported that MNA Sherry Rehman is next on the hit list of the extremists.
According to intelligence sources, Sherry Rehman who is under a hammer these days following tabling the amendment bill in the National Assembly after the conviction of Aasia Bibi, also received death threats and had to curtail her public appearances.
When the party retreated from the bold position it had taken earlier, Rehman was left with no choice but to withdraw the bill and ensure her own safety.
It must be worth-mentioning that said bill, ever since it was tabled, has been lying dormant in the records of the parliament and was not even handed over to the relevant sub-committee for debate as per the rules of business.
Since last many days Islamabad has virtually turned into a killing field in which even a federal minister is not safe and sound.
Acting on the reports of the Intelligence Agencies, a security plan of the federal ministers inducted in the federal cabinet has been revised so that in future such heinous incidents could be curtailed.
Federal government, viewing the circumstances and intermittent threats being received from the extremists has tightened the security of Sherry Rehman and other Federal Ministers in this regard.
