SIU chief survives Karachi bomb attack; two killed

KARACHI: At least two people were killed and eight others injured in a suicide attack on the vehicle of Special Investigation Unit (SIU) chief SSP Farooq Awan on Thursday.
Banned militant group Jundullah claimed the responsibility for the attack. CID SSP Raja Umer Khatab said that the suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden car into the convoy of SSP Farooq Awan while it was passing Gizri Graveyard, in Defence Phase-IV area.
He said it was a high-intensity explosion which was heard in surrounding areas. It created a 15-foot deep crater and adversely damaged the bulletproof vehicle of Awan. Three persons were reported killed in the blast while eight others, including SSP Farooq Awan, and two women sustained wounds. Police, other law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and rescue personnel shifted the injured to Jinnah Hospital which is situated near the site of the blast.
According to hospital sources condition of some of the injured people was serious and it was feared that the death toll could rise further. Police officials said about 50 to 100 kilogrammes of explosive material was used in the attack. Some sources claimed that the attack was carried out through improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a car parked by roadside.
Banned militant group Jundullah claimed responsibility for the attack on SSP Farooq Awan. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, President Mamnoon Hussain, PTI chief Imran Khan, MQM chief Altaf Hussain and leaders of different political parties have condemned the suicide attack on police officials. They condoled with the bereaved families and prayed for early recovery of those injured in the attack.
