ISLAMABAD: Pakistan officially welcomed the holy month of Ramazan on Sunday evening just after the sunset, as the moon was sighted in many parts of the country.

The central Ruet-e-Hilal committees had met on Saturday evening for Ramazan moon sighting, but decided the first Ramazan will be on Monday as no sightings were reported across the country.

The meeting was presided over by the committee's chairman, Mufti Muneebur Rehman. The moon, however, was visible on Sunday evening when Muslims from across the country started preparing for Taraveeh prayers. The Pakistan Meteorological Department had also predicted beginning of Ramazan from Monday.

Meanwhile, Muslims in several countries across the world including Australia and Middle Eastern countries welcomed the sacred month with Taraveeh prayers on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, people of Bajaur, Waziristan and Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are observed their first fast on Sunday following announcement of an unofficial moon-sighting committee.

According to media reports, controversy surrounded Ramadan moon-sighting this year too, as the unofficial moon-sighting committee announced its decision contrary to that of central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

"The committee is unanimous that first Ramadan will fall on Monday as no evidence of the sighting of a lunar crescent was received from any part of the country until the setting of the moon", Mufti Munib-ur-Rehman, Chairman Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, told a press conference in Karachi after committee's meeting at Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) camp office.

End.
