ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: The second phase of scrutiny of electoral nomination papers came to an end on Sunday, with the rejection of nomination papers of some bigwigs in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, particularly former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.

The day started with the rejection of nomination papers of Raja Pervez Ashraf. He submitted his nomination papers from his hometown Gojar Khan, which located in the NA-51 constituency. The day also saw the rejection of nomination papers of former opposition leader in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan from NA-53 Taxila; however, his nomination for NA-52, Rawalpindi, was accepted by the returning officer.

The nomination papers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz stalwart and former opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan have been rejected for NA-53 during the scrutiny process for not declaring accurate details about his assets. The nomination papers of former military ruler Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf for NA-48, Islamabad, were also rejected for non-compliance with the requirements of articles 62 and 63. This follows rejection of his papers for NA-250 and NA-139. However, the former dictator had his nomination papers accepted for NA-32, Chitral.

Officials in Chitral approved Musharraf's candidature on Sunday, an AFP journalist witnessed. "His papers are in order. He is not convicted so far so we cannot disqualify him," returning officer Jamal Khan said. Meanwhile, Awami Muslim League President Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, whose nomination was challenged, had his nomination papers accepted for NA-55.

The returning officers have accepted the papers of Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Hamza Shahbaz Sharif, Ayesha Ahad Malik, Kashmala Tariq, Hamayun Akhtar, Imran Khan and other prominent politicians from constituencies of Lahore city. The returning officer also approved the nomination papers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Javed Hashmi for NA-48.

Returning Officer Shaukat Mehmood on Sunday rejected the nomination papers of former MNA Jamshaid Dasti for NA-178, Muzaffargarh. According to official sources, nomination papers of Jamshaid Dasti for NA-178 were rejected due to his three-year imprisonment in a fake degree case. The nomination papers of PPP leader and former federal state minister Imtiaz Safdar Warraich from NA-98 Gujranwala were rejected. During the scrutiny, nomination papers of PPP's candidate from NA-118 named Asif Hashmi (Evacuee Trust Board Pakistan chairman) were rejected for holding of government job.

End.
